300th Anniversary of Corelli's Death: Concerto Grosso by Composers Who Loved Corelli
[Product Number: ACC-24281] [72'53''] [Import CD] [Accent]
2013 marks the 300th anniversary of Corelli's death. He was a leading Italian Baroque composer and a virtuoso violinist. He is particularly known for establishing the style of the concerto grosso (grosso concerto), and Corelli's Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, is considered his greatest masterpiece. Corelli's achievements have influenced many composers since, and this album features works by these composers.
Giovanni Mossi is said to have been a student of Corelli, and his influence can be seen in his compositions. Locatelli is known as a violin virtuoso. His early works were influenced by Corelli, and the fourth of his twelve concerti grosso, included here as Opus 1, does not yet display the technical virtuosity of the violin. Vivaldi, who composed many works for violin in Italy, followed in Corelli's footsteps and further developed the concerti grosso. Geminiani, a renowned successor to Corelli, paid tribute to his teacher with a set of twelve concerti grosso based on Corelli's Opus 5. This work is performed by Florian Deuter and Harmonie-Universelle, a young, keenly sensitive period instrument ensemble formed in 2003.
