Gulliver and the Orient: Oriental fantasies in Japanese and British iconography and works

As European colonial empires expanded, the illustrations that accompany the English translation of Gulliver's Travels increasingly feature representations of Orientalism, primarily Japanese, Chinese, and Islamic figures. This original study sheds detailed light for the first time on the Japonism and colonial fantasies of British and French illustrators, while also carefully tracing the trajectory of imitation and creativity by Japanese children's literature authors and illustrators from the Meiji period onward, who independently translated and adapted the original works.
