Hideaki Anno gives a warm recommendation! = "Congratulations on the re-release. If I hadn't come across this book, especially the mechanics section, when I was still a young man, I would not have realized the greatness of Narita Toru's work and works, or understood the designs of the early Ultra series as art, many years later. I would not be who I am today. Once again, I am grateful." Hideaki Anno (Director and Producer)
Toru Narita (1929-02), the great maestro of special effects art, who stands out for the sharp beauty of the shapes and colors of the heroes, monsters, aliens, and mechanics he created in "Ultra Q," "Ultraman," "Ultra Seven," "Mighty Jack," and other works. Narita's two major art books, "Ultra Monster Design Edition" and "Mechanics Edition," which have had a huge influence on up-and-coming creators such as Anno Hideaki and Higuchi Shinji, have been miraculously republished after 35 years!
The book contains a wide variety of stunning color illustrations and valuable design drawings, including "first drafts/final drafts/unused drafts," with a focus on the four aforementioned works. The preface includes popular characters such as Alien Baltan, Red King, and Eleking, as well as Garadama (large and small), a mummy monster that is not Dodongo, and the inside of a dinosaur tank. In the afterword, there are super rare illustrations that will make any enthusiast cry, such as the MJ, Pibrider, Ultra Hawk 1, 2, 3, Pointer, Space Beetle, and other mechas, the Science Patrol and Ultra Guard base set designs, the MJ, Ryusei, and Ultra Guard mark design transitions, the costumes of the team members, the unreleased Q submarine, the initial design of the four-wheeled Magma Riser, and the Hawk 2 launch pad, as well as design drawings for the unproduced projects "Air Battleship," "Astro 5," and "U-jin." Narita himself provides illustration commentary, an afterword, and a brief chronology at the end of the book.
A large number of precious illustrations that have not been published in other books related to Narita Toru and can only be seen in this art book are included, totaling more than 100 pages!
