The first version of the German heavy tank destroyer was named Ferdinand after its designer, Ferdinand Porsche. The PanzerjägerTiger (P) Elefant was built on the Tiger I tank chassis. Serial production began in 1943. Initially named Ferdinand, the Ferdinand saw combat on the Eastern Front and in the Battle of Kursk. The tank destroyer was armed with a powerful 88mm PaK 43/2 L/71 anti-tank gun, which was effective against almost all enemy vehicles. Thick armor provided good protection for the vehicle. Despite its impressive statistics, the Ferdinand also had several drawbacks. These included limited mobility, engine and suspension failures, and vulnerability to infantry attack. After the Battle of Kursk, the 48 surviving vehicles were modernized and renamed Elefant. Additions included improved armor, a frontal machine gun, a commander's cupola, and a dimmer. The Elefant was one of the most powerful German vehicles to appear on the battlefield during World War II. However, due to the low production volume of this model, its role in the war was limited. Nevertheless, the vehicle inspires the imagination of history and military technology enthusiasts. It is also one of the most famous vehicles of World War II.
