The large aperture of F1.4 allows for photographic expression that makes use of an extremely shallow depth of field. The eight-blade circular aperture suppresses light beams when shooting point light sources and produces soft bokeh from maximum aperture to F2.8. The front of the lens is coated with SP (Super Protect) which is highly water- and oil-repellent and easy to wipe clean. By supporting aperture setting on the lens side and AF using an in-body motor, all functions can be used when the lens is attached to older K-mount digital SLR cameras or AF film SLR cameras.
