Kyoyaki (Kiyomizu ware) is one of Kyoto's most representative traditional crafts. Its origins lie in the Gojozaka area, the approach to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, where many kilns, including those of Kiyomizu Rokubei and Takahashi Michihachi, were located. The hand-drawn designs have a three-dimensional quality not found in printed pieces, and the construction and designs evoke a distinctly Kyoto atmosphere. In Kyoyaki, small tea bowls are also called "hirako." While the pattern may appear simple, it highlights the highly skilled craftsmanship required for this piece.
