Product Introduction
Pit-Road 1/700 Skywave Series Imperial Japanese Navy Coast Defense Ship Shimushu Plastic Model SPW82
The Shimushu-class coastal defense ships (Shumushu, Kunashiri, Hachijo, and Ishigaki) were built primarily for the purpose of patrolling the northern waters, with the first ship, Shimushu, commissioned in June 1940.
As the Naval Technical Department was focused on building capital ships, the design was outsourced to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries' Ship Planning Department.
To accommodate the northern waters in winter, the hull was designed to be ice-resistant, equipped with ice-breaking equipment and cold-weather facilities, and designed to allow access from the bow and bridge to the stern without going out onto the open deck, even in rough weather.
After the outbreak of war, Shimushu participated in the Malayan landings and then engaged in convoy escort duties.
After the war, it was used as a demobilization transport ship, and was then handed over to the Soviet Union as a reparation ship in July 1947.
